Protecting Your Peace in a Season of Change

Protecting Your Peace in a Season of Change

Hello Family,

As we step into the darker, colder months and prepare for the upcoming presidential election, I want to encourage each of you to prioritize your mental and emotional well-being. The days are getting shorter, with daylight savings time ending this weekend, and as many of us know, this time of year can affect our mood and energy levels. For some, it can even lead to what’s known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which brings symptoms like fatigue, changes in sleep and appetite, and even feelings of sadness or hopelessness.

With the added weight of the news cycle, election season, and shorter days, it’s especially important that we take preventative measures to safeguard our mental health. Take a look at the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder and consider the ways we can prevent and manage it—whether through intentional rest, increased exposure to natural light, connecting with community, or dedicating time each day to our relationship with God. An ounce of wisdom and preparedness goes a long way.

Be Mindful of Media Exposure

With the election just five days away, it's easy to get swept up in the constant news updates, social media debates, and opinions that can heighten our stress and anxiety. I encourage you to set limits on your media exposure. Set aside intentional times to check the news, but don’t let it consume you. God reminds us to guard our hearts and minds—so let’s make sure we’re filling them with things that uplift, encourage, and remind us of His peace.

Simple Practices to Sustain Your Spirit

1. Daily Prayer and Reflection:

Spend time each day grounding yourself in God’s word and in prayer. Let His peace be your guide in navigating uncertain times.

2. Connect with Community: Reach out to others in the congregation, whether in person or virtually. A small conversation, prayer group, or Bible study can remind us we’re not alone.

3. Get Moving and Embrace the Outdoors: Even if it’s chilly, time outdoors and light exercise can do wonders for our mood. If it’s cloudy, even the fresh air can lift your spirits.

4. Create a Bedtime Routine: With the time change, sleep schedules can be thrown off. Take time to unwind at night, away from screens and to let your mind and body reset.

Together, let’s lean on one another and on God to find hope and light as we enter this season. We were created to be resilient and to find peace that surpasses all understanding. If you ever need to talk or need support, please know I am here.

Take care of yourselves and each other. Be well, be watchful, and be prepared to keep peace within your spirit.
